How to Organize Your Email for Financial Success
Email is a critical mode of communication for everything from financial statements to job offers. But whether your inbox has 1,000 unread emails or 10, it can be overwhelming. Most of our inboxes are filled with a mixture of important reminders, account updates, newsletters, and threads with family and friends, but mostly junk mail.
Sifting through hundreds of emails each day can mean the important messages get lost, put off, or forgotten. This can hinder not only productivity but also opportunities.
If you’re overwhelmed by your inbox or don’t think you’re maximizing its potential—don’t worry! Here are some tips you can use to organize your email for success:
- Unsubscribe from unnecessary emails: The first step to an organized inbox is unsubscribing from unnecessary emails. These may be newsletters you once signed up for but no longer read, or marketing emails from stores you tend to shop at. An easy way to get started is to set aside an hour or so to go through each email and hit “unsubscribe.”
- Create Folders: Folders are a great way to keep your inbox organized and ensure every email has a place. As professional organizers might call it, this step is “containment.” When you contain your emails in applicable folders, you’ll know where to find what you’re looking for when you need it.
- Have a regular check-in date: Setting up folders and filters can help you organize your mail, but it’s equally important to check those folders routinely. Consider setting up a regular time and day to go through each folder and address your emails.
- Set alerts for urgent emails: The final step in organizing your email is setting up alerts for urgent or extremely important emails. If you use email on your phone, you can enable notifications for specific emails or emails from specific senders. Then, when an important one comes in, you will be notified immediately. The same is true for your desktop mail.
Organizing your email will take some time upfront, but it can ultimately save you time in the future. When your inbox is free from junk mail and your emails are all sorted, it’s much easier to navigate.
